TYPE 2 DIABETES- A BIG PROBLEM FOR EMPLOYERS
Over 86 million Americans are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the next few years. The costs from type 2 diabetes is estimated to be $327 billion. The American Diabetes Association estimates that $90 billion dollars is also lost in worker productivity each year from problems associated with type 2 diabetes.
Employers are increasingly interested in programmes that can prevent type 2 diabetes in their workforce, in an effort to avoid future costs and complications associated with this preventable disease.
THE CDC’S DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAMME PREVENTS FUTURE COSTS OF TYPE 2 DIABETES
The Centre for Disease Control’s (CDC) diabetes prevention programme (DPP) is a 12 month diet and lifestyle programme designed to help those at risk for type 2 diabetes lose 5-10% of their body weight, through diet and lifestyle changes, in an effort to prevent type 2 diabetes. The CDC’s DPP programme is based on clinical research published in 2002 in the New England Journal of Medicine, indicating that participants who completed the CDC’s DPP programme had a 58% risk reduction for developing type 2 diabetes.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) conducted a financial analysis of the costs of type 2 diabetes and concluded that diabetics have $7,000 more healthcare costs than non-diabetics. CMS indicated that the CDC’s DPP avoided costs of $2,650 per participant from future costs associated with type 2 diabetes, even if participants completed only a portion of the 12 month programme.
